Why Well-Child Visits Matter

Well-child visits play an important role in helping children stay healthy as they grow. These appointments focus on prevention, early detection, and ongoing guidance rather than treating illness alone.

During regular well visits, providers are able to monitor growth and development over time, identify concerns early, and support healthy physical, emotional, and behavioral development. These visits also give parents a consistent opportunity to ask questions, share observations, and receive guidance as their child reaches new milestones.

Staying on schedule with well-child visits helps ensure your child is developing as expected and allows small concerns to be addressed before they become bigger issues.

What Happens During a Well-Child Visit

Each well-child visit is tailored to your child’s age and individual needs. During these appointments, your child’s provider may:

  • Measure height, weight, and growth patterns
  • Review developmental milestones
  • Perform age-appropriate screenings
  • Discuss nutrition, sleep, behavior, and activity
  • Administer recommended vaccines
  • Complete school, daycare, or sports forms when appropriate

Parents are encouraged to ask questions and bring up any concerns no matter how small they may seem. These visits are designed to support both your child and your family.

How Often Should Visits Be Scheduled

Well-child visits follow the recommended schedule from the American Academy of Pediatrics. These visits typically occur at:

  • 3–5 days old

  • 1 month

  • 2, 4, 6, and 9 months

  • 12, 15, and 18 months

  • 24 and 30 months

  • Annually through adolescence

Your provider will help you plan upcoming visits, keep your child on schedule, and explain what to expect at each stage.
