Care in the Hospital
If your baby is born at ECU Health, our physicians make hospital visits to see newborns shortly after delivery. The timing of this visit depends on when your baby is born and may occur before office hours or later in the evening.
During hospital visits, our providers check on your baby’s early health, review delivery details, and help answer common newborn questions. They will also help you understand what to expect once you’re home and how to schedule your baby’s first pediatric visit after discharge.
This early connection helps ensure a smooth transition from hospital care to ongoing pediatric care.
Lactation and Feeding Support
Feeding questions are common in the early weeks, and support is always available. Children’s Health Services offers access to an on-site lactation specialist, along with guidance from our clinical team.
We support breastfeeding, pumping, formula feeding, and combination feeding, and can help with:
- Latching and positioning
- Milk supply concerns
- Pumping schedules
- Weight gain and feeding frequency
Feeding plans are discussed with your family’s needs, comfort, and goals in mind.
After Discharge: Your First Visits
Once you bring your baby home, the first pediatric visits are an important part of making sure everything is off to a healthy start. Newborn visits are typically scheduled within 3–4 days after birth, depending on hospital discharge.
These early appointments focus on:
- weight and feeding progress
- jaundice screening
- growth and early development
- sleep and routine questions
- parent concerns and questions
Our providers take time to explain what’s normal in the early days, what to watch for, and when to reach out. These visits are meant to support both your baby and you as you adjust to life at home.
