Everything families need to know to prepare for their child’s first pediatric visit

What to Expect at Your First Visit
Getting started with Children’s Health Services is designed to be straightforward and supportive. During your first visits, our providers take time to learn about your child, review medical history, and talk through any concerns you may have, from feeding and sleep to growth, development, and behavior.
- For newborns, visits are typically scheduled within 3–4 days after birth, depending on hospital discharge. Providers will check weight, feeding progress, jaundice, and early development, and help parents understand what to expect in the first weeks at home.
- For infants & children, routine well-child visits follow the recommended schedule and include growth checks, developmental screenings, vaccines, and time for parent questions. If your child becomes sick between visits, same-day sick appointments, walk-in care, and after-hours nurse triage are available.
- For adolescents, care includes annual checkups, sports physicals, behavioral screenings, and support for ongoing health needs, with private time with providers when appropriate.
Before Your Visit
Review Our Office Policies
Before your first appointment, we ask families to review our office policies. This includes information about scheduling, walk-in sick visits, after-hours care, vaccines, insurance, and appointment expectations. If you have questions, our front office team is happy to help.
Complete New Patient Forms
New patient packets are completed in person at either location, Monday–Friday from 8:00 AM–4:00 PM. Once forms are completed and your child is scheduled, there is typically an age-appropriate ASQ completed as part of care. All required forms and policies are available on our Office Forms page for review before your visit.
Transferring Medical Records
If you are changing pediatricians, our office will guide you through the process of transferring records from your previous provider. Families transferring from another city or state should bring immunization records to their first visit.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
Please bring the following items to every visit:
- Your child’s insurance card
- A photo ID for the parent or guardian
You may also bring:
- Immunization records (especially if transferring from out of state)
- A list of medications, allergies, or medical concerns
- Custody or permission-to-treat documentation, if applicable
If you don’t have everything yet, bring what you can, our team will help you gather what’s missing.
